Did you know that the Milwaukee Running Festival is hosting weekly Social Runs every Thursday night from now until the end of October? We meet at 6pm each week and will run a course between 3 and 5 miles at different locations around the city. Post-run refreshments will be provided afterward- and it’s free!
Runners of every level are welcome. Don’t be shy, come out and join us! Here’s where we’re headed next:
The Milwaukee Running Festival is the first marathon to take place exclusively within the city of Milwaukee. The 26.2-mile route will highlight many Milwaukee landmarks and the city’s diverse neighborhoods.
The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee campus is one of the highlights of the Milwaukee Running Festival course. The Half Marathon and Marathon routes will touch the southern end of campus in the fourth mile. The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, also known as UW-Milwaukee or UWM, is the largest university in the Milwaukee area, and the second largest in the entire state of Wisconsin. This university was founded in 1885 as a teacher’s college. In 1955, it expanded and became a public university with a liberal arts program and many other programs. It has a total student enrollment of 27,813, and offers 181 total degree programs. UW-Milwaukee is a member of the NCAA Division 1 sports conference, the Horizon League, and has 15 varsity sports programs.
UWM’s campus spans an area of 104 acres. It is located on the upper east side of the city, very close to downtown and is 5 blocks from the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
Each week we will be featuring a landmark or neighborhood along our marathon or half marathon route. 26 weeks, 26 photos, 26 (.2) miles. You can play along too and contribute your own photos on social media- just remember to use the tag #MKERunFest!
Mile 2 of the marathon and half marathon will take our runners up Lincoln Memorial Drive where participants will experience a great view of Lake Michigan to the east. During this stretch they will also run past the beautiful Bradford Beach. People from all over the Milwaukee area gather on the beach all summer long to enjoy the sun, sand, and beach volleyball. In addition to the beach volleyball league, Bradford Beach is also the location of an adult beach soccer league. The bathhouse at Bradford offers food and drinks and offers a place to relax out of the direct sun. The very popular North Point Custard is also located nearby.
The Oak Leaf Trail stretches up and down the lakefront parallel to Bradford Beach and is a popular training route for runners and cyclists. During the spring and summer months you’ll often find outdoor bootcamps and yoga classes happening along this area of the lakefront. The Oak Leaf Trail is also the location of the Build Up runs hosted by the Milwaukee Running Festival in the lead up to the event!
